چکیده

The morphology of the joint interface is described using geostatistical parameters such as the sill, range and slope of the initiaI part of the variogram. The methodology is also used to identify the scale effect and to determine the appropriate cutoff length of the sample which is representative for a direct shear test. The anisotropy characteristics of the interface are described using the sill and slope of the initial portion of the variogram. The result is used to assess the flowpath for a hypothetical fluid injection test. The surface compliance of the interface subjected to shear is determined using the mean difference of the interface. The rate of deformation of the interface is represented in two-dimensions using polar coordinates. The practical implication of the rate of collapse of the loop on the stability of the translation motion is given. © 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

A Homodyne Quadrature Laser Interferometer for Micro-Asperity Deformation Analysis

We report on the successful realization of a contactless, non-perturbing, displacement-measuring system for characterizing the surface roughness of polymer materials used in tribological applications. A single, time-dependent, scalar value, dubbed the collective micro-asperity deformation, is extracted from the normal-displacement measurements of normally loaded polymer samples. The displacemen...

Nanotribology of CoCr–UHMWPE TJR prosthesis using atomic force microscopy

Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) submicron wear debris particles in total joint replacement (TJR) prosthesis have been observed clinically to cause osteolysis. In this study, the formation of UHMWPE submicron wear debris was investigated by modeling a nanoscale asperity on the surface of a CoCr femoral component of a total knee replacement (TKR) prosthesis using a Si3N4 AFM com...

Micromechanics of Rough Interfaces

The mechanical behavior of rough interfaces is modeled from a micromechanical viewpoint. A kinematically driven mechanistic approach is adopted which explicitly considers the interaction of asperities on the fracture surface. The mating asperities are assumed to behave in accordance with contact mechanics postulates of non-conforming bodies. The roughness of the fracture surface is represented ...

Characterization of Rough Engineering Surfaces for Use in Thermal Contact Conductance Modeling

Most surface properties used in the calculation of contact conductance are not intrinsic to the surface, but vary with the sampling frequency of the instrument used to characterize the surface. This paper offers a methodology for characterizing a surface based on intrinsic surface characterization properties (the self-affine fractal dimension and topothesy), intrinsic material properties, and a...
